A Letter from Hugh Davies
Core Studio Program Director

Dear First-Year Student:

On behalf of our entire faculty, I am very pleased to welcome you to this special Ringling College of Art and Design website, and look forward to giving you a brief overview of the First Year/Core Studio Program. By now you will be well into your preparations for arriving in Sarasota and will be receiving a range of information throughout the summer to help you plan the nuts and bolts of beginning your education here. As a first-year student you will take most of your studio courses in our intensive Core Studio Program. To help you prepare to begin your academic program, we would like to tell you about some of the things you can expect.

The Core Studio Program is designed to support the overall goal of the College, which is to provide an intensive professional education in the visual arts. Our goal is to help you develop the qualities, skills, and practices that will support your development as a visual artist at this stage. We approach this through a rigorous and demanding educational process that focuses on the concepts, ideas and skills which are central to the practice of the Art and Design.

You will learn by doing. The standards adhered to in our Program are based upon those used in the fields of professional art and design. You will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, to think and explore creatively, to meet deadlines, to present work in a professional manner, and to participate constructively in class discussions and critiques.

Along with an immersion in a full range of skills and processes that will form a basis for your creative work, the Program emphasizes the development of attributes essential for professional creative work: the development of discipline, self-motivation, flexibility in thinking, and the ability to make critical judgments paired with the development of creative thinking, risk-taking and a spirit of exploration. Expect to approach the creative process in a spirit of both work and play.

LIBERAL ARTS COURSES

The Liberal Arts courses you will take as part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts curriculum will be essential to your development as an artist. An effective artist, active in any media, must be informed and aware of the critical issues of past and present. Art and design, and ideas are inseparable. These courses will form the basis from which you will draw and use in your creative work.

 CORE COMMUNICATION

During your first year, we will communicate many of the Core Studio Program events and information by email.  It is your responsibility to check your email, and save email from Core. You will receive an email address during New Student Orientation and you will be expected to check your email at least two to three times a week.

Expect your first year to be challenging, stimulating, enjoyable, and rewarding. Success will require an open mind, a willingness to explore, a receptive attitude, and a firm commitment to learning. Our faculty of professional artists, designers, and scholars look forward to meeting you and to the beginning of a productive and engaging working relationship.

  Sincerely,

Hugh Davies
Core Studio Program Director
