Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are your hours?
A: Current and Break hours are listed on the Library Information page.

Q: Where is the library located on campus?

A: The library is located on the north side of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, on the west side of Scott Plaza. Designated parking for visitors is on the south side of the boulevard in the Selby Gallery parking area. See the campus map.

Q: Do alumni have borrowing privilages?

A: Graduates of Ringling College of Art and Design have perpetual borrowing privileges at Kimbrough Library. They may check out up to 15 items--excluding CDs and slides--at a time and use the online subscription databases when visiting the Library. Register at the Circulation Desk for a library card.

Q: Can members of the community use the library?

A: Yes, for research and browsing. If you also wish to checkout materials, you may become a member of the Ringling College Library Association. Individual memberships are $50.00 per year.

Q: The book I want has a location of STACKS according to the online catalog. Where are the STACKS?

A: The STACKS are the large areas of shelving which hold books that can be checked out. Other locations such as REFERENCE and SPECIAL COLLECTIONS have books that may not be checked out.

Q: How long can books be checked out?

A: 3 weeks for students and Ringling School Library Association Members. 6 weeks for faculty and staff.

Q: How long can videos and DVDs be checked out?

A: 3 days for students and Ringling School Library Association members, 7 days for faculty and staff.

Q: Do you still have digital cameras for checkout?

A: The circulation of digital still cameras, digital video cameras, projectors, and laptop computers has been transfered to the IT department. Go to IT's Audio-Visual services page and scroll down to Digital Resources for Checkout for more information.

Q: Are library items ever due on Saturday or Sunday?

A: Almost never. Typically due dates skip over the weekend to the following Monday. For instance, if you check out a DVD on a Wednesday, the 3-day checkout period would make it due on Saturday. But because items are seldom due on weekends, the due date skips over to Monday, giving you an extra two days. However, at the discretion of the library or an instructor, equipment or Reserves may be due on Saturday or Sunday.

Q: Where are the Reserves kept?

A: Most reserve items are kept behind the circulation desk. You can ask for them there. You can look them up by instructor, department, or course number on the Course Reserve search in the online system, and there is a printed list of all reserve items, organized by instructor's name, at the circulation desk. While using a Reserve item in the library, you must leave your ID card, driver's license, or something else of value at the circulation desk. There is also an Open Reserve section, located near the Reference Collection. Items located here can be used freely. A spine label on each item will tell you whether it can be checked out or must be used in the library.

Q: Can I check Reserve items out of the library?

A: Sometimes. Whenever an instructor places an item on reserve, he or she decides whether the item can be checked out. The instructor can choose from the following options for each reserve item: In-library use only, 1-day checkout, 3-day checkout, 7-day checkout.

Q: Why shouldn't we put books and periodicals back on the shelves ourselves when we're done with them?

A: We have two reasons for asking you to leave books and periodicals out on the tables when you're done with them. First, we compile statistics on what is being used in the library, which helps us with future collection development. Second, it does allow us to make sure all items get back to their proper locations on the shelves, for the benefit of the next patron who needs them to find them.

Q: Do you employ students in the library?

A: Yes, we count on the contributions of student workers in library operations. Openings for student positions are listed with the Center for Career Services (CCS). A student applying for a library position begins by filling out an application in the Center for Career Services.

Q: How do I renew books?

A: You can renew most items up to three times without bringing them back to the library, provided they are not yet overdue or on hold for another patron. You may do this yourself by going to Your Library Account in the online system. Doing so will bring you to a screen where you are asked to enter your last name and the barcode number on the back of your ID. This in turn takes you to a screen listing all items currently checked out to you and gives you the option of renewing them. Alternately, you may call the library and ask us to renew your items. (This must be done during regular library hours-you may not renew via voice mail.) Or you may stop at the circulation desk and ask us to renew your items. After renewing an item three times, you must bring it back to the library. But, provided another patron does not have a hold on it, you may check it out again and begin the whole sequence a second time. If an item is overdue, you MUST bring it into the library and pay the fine before renewing it. If another patron has placed a hold on an item, you may not renew it. The other patron has dibs on it next.
