Volunteerism at the Ringling College

At Ringling College we strive to teach our students not only the fundamental artistic skills they will need to become practicing professional artists–we educate them to develop into responsible global artists. The Ringling College of Art and Design generates an average of 12,000 hours of service every year.

The Student Life Office and the Coordinator of Student Volunteerism and Service-Learning provide community service opportunities for the growth and development of the entire Ringling College community. A great deal of your learning beyond the classroom can take place through volunteerism. Becoming a student volunteer will help you gain professional skills and experience, you will become more socially responsible, gain a sense of belonging, meet other volunteers with similar values and interests, learn leadership skills, embrace diversity, and gain perspective by seeing others with different or more severe challenges than your own. Your worldview will be expanded as you gain insight into the Sarasota community and beyond.

As a Ringling College volunteer, you can share your strengths – artistic or otherwise – and have meaningful community experiences.

Volunteer projects in the past have included:

New Student Orientation Service Projects

Volunteerism Signup and Liability Waiver

When students arrive on campus for New Student Orientation each fall, they experience a variety of educational and social activities designed to help you successfully transition to Ringling College of Art and Design, and to become actively involved in the Sarasota community.

As Ringling College Coordinator of of Student Volunteerism and Service-Learning, my job is to develop and broaden these types of learning opportunities to help students enhance their leadership skills, build friendships, and facilitate teamwork. As part of the Orientation experience, students participate in a self-selected community service project.

YEA! Arts Program

Supported by the John H. and Robin E. Sullivan Foundation

The YEA! Arts  program enables the Ringling College to hire students to provide instruction and experiences in arts and crafts to youth at sites located around Sarasota County.  These are youth who have limited opportunities to experience the arts and will include sites such as youth shelters, foster care group homes, transitional housing, programs through the Juvenile Justice Department, second-chance schools and alternative schools.

Co-Curricular Transcripts

The Office of Student Life can help you document your volunteerism and other co-curricular efforts by compiling a Co-Curricular Transcript. This document supplements your academic transcript and provides an official record of your awards and efforts outside of the classroom while enrolled at Ringling College of Art and Design. These credentials may be used when applying for jobs, scholarships, graduate work, fellowships, and other postgraduate opportunities.
