Founded in 1931, Ringling College of Art and Design is one of the top tier private, not-for-profit art and design colleges fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and CIDA, the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Ringling College of Art and Design’s primary mission is to prepare students to be discerning visual thinkers and ethical practitioners in their chosen area of art and design or related field and to provide an intensive professional education in their chosen major. Ringling College has taken a leadership role in the integration of high technology within art and design curricula in response to the marketplace and trends in the professions.
The institution’s strategic plan positions the College for continued growth and development. It is authorized to award the BFA in thirteen visual arts disciplines and the BA in the Business of Art and Design, a new program that infuses a rigorous business curriculum within an art and design college. Ringling College employs 148 faculty who instruct 1,400 students from 46 states and 50 countries. The large residential campus is near downtown Sarasota. The Department:
As the first art and design college to establish an academic program titled the Business of Art and Design (BOAD), Ringling College is providing a national leadership role in educating future innovative leaders interested in learning business principals and skills in a creative context, understanding the creative process and how to help businesses become more creative, and developing the ability to work effectively with other creative individuals. This unique program integrates the creative thinking and problem-solving processes of art, design and design thinking with instruction in business practice. A carefully selected set of studio and business competencies are interwoven to produce graduates who possess strong business knowledge and skills and who understand and appreciate the world of art and design and the creative process.
Ringling College is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time faculty member and administrator to provide the academic and visionary leadership of the program in Business of Art & Design (BOAD).
Included among the Duties and Responsibilities of this position are: provide initiative, vision and leadership in program development and planning; manage and evaluate the performance of all full-time and part-time faculty in the department; and maintain responsibility for development, review, evaluation and evolution of the academic program.
This is a full-time faculty position, two-thirds administration, one-third teaching during the academic year. This is a renewable 9- or 10-month appointment. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications. The start date is negotiable but not later than August 2013.
Required Qualifications for the position will include evidence of:
- An advanced degree, preferably a Master’s degree in business and/or art or design, with a record of relevant leadership experience in creative and business capacities (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline)
- Experience with and/or understanding of key aspects of curriculum in business, curriculum development in general, budgetary activities, facilities, equipment and new technologies
- Demonstrated Experience in establishing and exercising visionary leadership and consultative decision-making
- An ability to clearly communicate, engage in effective public speaking, and work collaboratively and effectively with faculty, students and administrators
- An ability to effectively articulate and advance the vision and uniqueness of the Business of Art and Design program to business leaders, art educators, students, and other constituencies
- An ability to serve as a positive role model for students
Preferred Qualifications include evidence of:
- A MBA or MBD degree or other appropriate terminal degree from a regional or internationally accredited school
- Administrative leadership
- Successful college level teaching and record as a teacher with empathy and understanding for the role of teaching
- Experience in the design and delivery of academic programs, program assessment, planning and budgeting
- Aptitude in developing external sources of program support and external fundraising, including grants
- Vision and capacity to increase the national reputation of the BOAD program
- Broad familiarity with the varied disciplines of undergraduate instruction in visual arts and business education and related academic subjects
- Awareness of both current and evolving issues facing the field with curricular and delivery strategies to best address them
- Significant professional practice and achievements
- Skill as a consensus builder, able to combine the interests of differing viewpoints
