Image: Tom Stephens. Coat of Many Colors #66, 2014. Oil and acrylic on canvas. 11 x 11 inches

This exhibition includes ten paintings from the last decade that manifest Ringling College Alumnus Tom Stephens’ dedication as an artist to the consistent exploration of the studio practice of painting. Stephens’ paintings are densely textured composites of layers of ideas. He has an uncanny understanding of ambient light, nautical perspective and natural phenomenon. His affinity for the sea and landscape allow him to communicate sentient impressions of the natural flora and the environment of Florida.

Although his references may be specific his canvases are open ended experiences for the viewer. Everyone is encouraged to join Stephens’ journey into a physical and mysterious world of paint and pigment. Stephens is unafraid of color. His palette is bold. Realistic and fantastic color combinations provide an unlimited variety of possibilities for him to realize his concept. The voyage of discovery in his work is only limited by time and one’s imagination.
