Little Nemo: The Exhibition

Oct. 26-Dec. 12, 2012

Selby Galleries I & II: Drawing on the ground-breaking work of first animator Winsor McCay and his well-known comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, created for the New York Herald and New York American from 1905 to 1913the Sarasota Opera has commissioned composer Daron Aric Hagen and poet/librettist J.D. McClatchy to mount a production sourced from Little Nemo for its Youth Opera, to be performed in the Fall of 2012. Selby Gallery at Ringling College will feature our exhibition concurrently with the opera performances with Winsor McCays original drawings and comic strips along with sketches from the Sarasota Opera production, McCays films, and other related materials to showcase his work in a totally new context for the public.

Selby Galleries I & II: Robert Stackhouse, a major figure in the contemporary art scene since the 1980s, has been collaborating since 2007 with Carol Mickett, who has a background in philosophy, literature and poetry, to create large-scale, site specific sculptures along with related paintings and prints. They will be working together on a new piece to be premiered in the Selby Gallery for this exhibition that begins the discussion on the concept of “abstraction” in art.
