Cuban Art from the Collection of Jorge Reynardus.

November 6–December 9, 2015Opening Reception: November 6, 5-7 pm

Curator Tour: November 9, 11:30 pm

In November of 2015, the Selby Gallery will host a selection of paintings from the extensive collection of Sarasota resident Jorge Reynardus. Amassed over the past several decades, Reynardus purchased most of his work directly from the artists. These works have a particular resonance for the collector because of his relationship with the artists and their interests. The exhibition will give an overview of his particular choices and investigate the relationship of the artists to their subject matter. Most of the artists have left Cuba since Fidel Castro came to power. The government does not allow the freedom of expression that is available in the United States. The works in the show make a strong commentary on the history and cultural traditions of Cuba as well as the impact of the current regime on life and liberty on the island.
The selection of more than thirty dramatic paintings will include those by Jose Bédia, Augustin Fernández, Wifredo Lam and Glexis Novoa.
This exhibition will be an extraordinary opportunity for the visitor to Selby Gallery in Sarasota to study examples of this amazing private collection that was assembled in New York and is now in our community

Sponsored for in part by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax Revenues.

Selby Gallery is located on the Ringling College of Art and Design campus, one-half block east of 2700 N. Tamiami Trail on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way in Sarasota. All Selby Gallery exhibitions and presentations (and most of our special events) are free and open to the public.
