Gwen Fryer

Sarasota artist constructs what look like altarpieces or shrines from a variety of found objects and decorative wood from torn down houses. Many of her pieces include texts in Arabic, a reflection on her life as a child in North Africa (her father worked for a petroleum company) and what was to her a culture of mysteries.

 

Gallery II

Bruce Rosen

The late Bruce Rosen held a Ph.D. in American Literature and was a Herman Melville expert. He was also a talented artist and poet who used the philosophical and spiritual concerns found in 19th century romantic writing as the bases for his enigmatic minimalist paintings and his poetry, which will be included in the exhibition.

 

Window Installation
Justin Spring

Digital films by Justin Spring, a nationally recognized poet and founder of SoulSpeak, will be presented in the east window of the gallery. Spring and his collaborating poets practice a spontaneous form of purely verbal poetry, often in response to the work of musicians, artists and photographers like Jean Germain, who’s work will be included among the videos.

Preview Reception & Artist Presentations

Thurs., Nov. 15: Preview Reception at 5:30 p.m. in Selby Gallery followed by the presentations at 7 p.m.

Artist Gwen Fryer and Bruce Rosen’s widow Maxine Rosen will discuss the imagery and meaning behind the works represented in the concurrent exhibition. The preview & presentations are free and open to the public.

Opening Reception

Director’s Tour

Mon., Nov. 19, 11:30 a.m.

The Selby Gallery Director will walk you through an in depth and intimate historical perspective of the exhibit The Image and The Word – and tie the discussion into the current pulse of today’s’ contemporary art landscape. The tour meets at Selby Gallery at 11:30 a.m. The tour is free and open to the public.
