Opening Reception - April 29

“CELEBRATING THE GREAT THEMES OF PHOTOGRAPHY”

Nature, The Human Condition, Still life

Great Themes:  An intellectual process of studying the basic components of an image, subject, form and content  in three categories

Nature:

It was once proposed that in photography nature could be described as ‘not from the hand of man’, or not made by man.  Things belonging in the nature category spring from the earth itself.  A simple example of this concept might be a loaf of bread.  The wheat, salt and yeast are from nature yet the bread is the work of the hand of man and would belong in the still life category.  It can be argued that a field of wheat is produced through the cultivation. Although man has cultivated wheat,  it existed well before man harnessed it for the good of mankind.  I believe we can all agree that a pencil or a book came from the hand of man yet a butterfly, flower or close up image of a yeast spore belong in the realm of nature.

The Human Condition:

Being human  we share many experiences and it’s these experiences that create the human condition like;  love, the body language of emotions, work and play, faith and sorrow.  All of these belong within the realm of the human condition. That’s not to say that photographic expression of the human condition should be limited to these subjects.

Still Life:

The expression of intrinsic beauty of inanimate objects, or possibly the lack of beauty.   It’s likely that a study of rhythm, one attribute of repetition, might be considered to belong in this category.
