Ringling College of Art and Design and Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA) Announce Finalists in Architectural Design Competition
Sarasota, FL – September 21, 2006 – Ringling College of Art and Design and the Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA), a division of Ringling College, announce that five (5) architectural firms have been selected as finalist candidates in an Architectural Design Competition intended to select an architect to transform historic Sarasota High School into the Visual Arts Education Center (VAEC.)
In August of 2006, Ringling College and SMOA issued a “Request for Qualifications” which was distributed through the Gulf Coast and Tampa Bay chapters of the AIA (American Institute of Architects) as phase one of this Architectural Design Competition. Architects were asked to submit their qualifications including museum and/or gallery experience; experience with historic preservation projects; examples of recent work, and resumes of principal members of the project team. Submissions were received from firms as far away as California.
The VAEC Building Committee (representing Ringling College, SMOA and the Sarasota County School Board) have invited the following five firms to participate in the second phase of the competition:
- The ADP Group, Sarasota, in collaboration with Vince Ciulla Design, Sarasota, FL
- BMK Architects, Sarasota, FL
- Bowen Architecture, Sarasota, FL
- Jackson + Hall Architects, Sarasota, FL
- Rowe Architects, Tampa, FL
Ringling College President Dr. Larry R. Thompson noted: “This architectural competition is a significant and dynamic step forward for Ringling College of Art and Design/Sarasota Museum of Art’s shared vision for the redevelopment of the historic Sarasota High School building into a center for visual arts education. We are delighted to see this level of interest from the architectural community.”
“Because of the specialized nature of this project, I am delighted by the number of highly qualified applicants who responded to the R-F-Q. I am thrilled that all of the finalists are from Sarasota and Tampa” added SMOA President Wendy Surkis.
Each architectural firm selected as a finalist candidate will prepare a formal concept proposal including floor plans, site plans and building sections and will make a presentation to a Jury consisting of leading museum and design professionals and representatives of the Ringling College and SMOA Boards. The presentations are open to the public and will be held Thursday, November 9, 2006 beginning at 10 a.m. in the new Student Center Exhibition Hall on the Ringling College of Art and Design campus. Each finalist will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium for the submission and presentation. The presentation materials will remain on display through November 22, 2006.
