Explore the tactile and fun nature of clay in this introduction to the medium. Emphasis will be on the fundamental skills, vocabulary, equipment, materials, and preparations specific to ceramics. Each 5-week series will focus on a specific project. Students should come prepared with creative ideas for personalizing their projects, as well as ideas for building their own original clay creations. 

NOTE: Price includes up to 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and firing for in-class projects. Additional clay may be purchased from EAC. Students must adhere to the EAC’s Pottery Studio Policies and Procedures.

Spend quality time together creating festive ceramic objects from clay. In this class, students of all ages will have a hands-on, creative experience while learning the basics of ceramics in a fun and relaxed environment. Each 4-week series will focus on a specific project, and students are encouraged to express their creativity by customizing their projects. Finished pieces will be unique to the student(s) who created them, making them great gifts for loved ones.

Learn handbuilding or refine your wheel throwing techniques while creating a variety of ceramic objects. Hand building instruction will focus on slab, coil and pinch methods. Advanced students will learn decorative and finishing applications. Experienced wheel throwers are welcome to use the limited number of wheels to practice advanced throwing techniques with individual instruction. Basic glazing practices will also be covered.

Learn basic wheel skills or develop advanced throwing skills in this hands-on studio course. Beginners will learn centering, opening, and throwing techniques, while experienced potters will explore the medium to create a variety of functional objects from basic shapes.

Sculptural Forms in Ceramics

Explore 3-D and sculptural forms using a variety of clay working techniques. Students will receive one-on-one guidance and instruction while independently working on projects of their choosing. This course focuses on creative and artistic sculptural objects, with less emphasis on utility. Some ceramics experience is suggested, but is not required.

Create the wildest, most whimsical mermaid you can imagine and make fun "animal" tumblers you'll be proud to drink from or turn your inspiration into reality with an object from your imagination An not to worry, if you were looking forward to making a fabulous fish this season or lovely garden totem, Paul can surely make it happen! Learn basic clay slab skills and explore various approaches to decorating your ceramic objects.

Ceramic Luminary Workshop

Brighten any space with a hand-made ceramic luminary. Students can choose from select styles made from slabs of clay that are rolled, cut and pierced to emit candle light. Feel free to bring your cookie cutter to use as a template, choose a provided pattern or bring your own ideas. After the week of drying time students will come in and refine and glaze their light-play creations and the luminaries will be ready for pick up the following week.

Glazing: Beyond the Dip & Pour (Master Class)

Learn decorative glazing techniques beyond the usual dip and pour methods. Experiment with natural colorants, resists, over-painting, and layering. Achieve a wide range of colors, textures, and visual effects by discovering these creative glazing methods. 

PREREQUISITE: Prior glazing experience  

NOTE: Some pottery pieces will be supplied. Students are encouraged to bring a minimum of 2 green and 2 bisque pieces, which will require firing to cone 5.

Decorating with Underglazes (Master Class)

Add a rich, distinctive element to your ceramics by learning the art of decorative underglazing. Playful experimentation will be encouraged as students explore washes, wax-resist, scraffitto, stencils, and free-hand painting.

PREREQUISITE: Prior glazing experience

NOTE: Some pottery pieces will be supplied. Students are encouraged to bring a minimum of 2 green and 2 bisque pieces, which will require firing to cone 5.
