"Journeys" is the theme for our 2012-2013 Season.

As LBKCA celebrates its 60th anniversary, we honor the journey of so many creative individuals who have stewarded and inspired our broader community of arts and culture.

In the early 1950’s, the Longbeach Village was small and "feisty" according to Lora Colvin Whitney’s book "Hail this Feisty Village". Through the creative imaginings of this small group of individuals, the Longboat Key Art Center was manifested from a donated piece of property and a small rustic building.

The Art Center progressed and grew up in the 1960’s and 70’s establishing an "arts community" on Longboat Key. As the Art Center grew, so did the population of the Village as well as all of Longboat Key. During the 1980’s and 1990’s interest and participation continued to increase. By the end of the 1990’s a site plan was developed and approved by the Town Commissioners to enlarge the campus, expand the offerings to include the performing arts, and to rename the Art Center the "Longboat Key Center for the Arts" in coordination to receive significant funding to begin realizing the potential of the property seen today.

In 2007, the LBKCA Board of Directors approached Ringling College of Art and Design and was asked to consider assuming full control of LBKCA in order to continue offering cultural and creative programming for the people on Longboat Key and beyond. Without hesitation, RCAD College President, Dr. Larry Thompson said "Yes"! Since the merger with Ringling College, Longboat Key Center for the Arts has continued to provide programming that inspires creativity, enhances cultural understanding, and brings together a community of like minded individuals in celebration of the arts staying true to the legacy of the early founders.

HAPPY 60TH ANNIVERSARY to the arts, culture and creativity on Longboat Key!
