As we view an outdoor landscape scene we plan to paint, we can quickly become overwhelmed with the vast amount of information before us. How do we deal with the varying light and atmospheric conditions, the numerous color variations and the many shapes and their edges? To be successful we need to simplify. This outdoor class teaches the methods and tools you need to succeed. These methods and tools cover how to effectively select and compose as well as how to manage light and color. Weather permitting, the class will meet outdoors either on Longboat Key or at The Ringling Museum. In case of rain, students will work in the studio. All skill levels welcome.

Moving away from realism and external reference frees up the artist to explore both in technique and subject matter. In this class, you will learn different ways to approach abstract painting using color, line, form and collage. Through discussion and practice, students learn about the different types of abstraction and what makes a successful abstract painting. Students will learn experimental techniques such as using acrylic paint with other mediums to create special effects on different surfaces. All skill levels welcome.
