The Ringling College of Art and Design Summer Teacher Institute provides an immersive professional development experience for educators in the arts and related disciplines. This weeklong institute is designed to provide creative experiences to both introduce and explore new techniques; and to ultimately enhance instructional delivery by sharing ideas and processes that will promote and enhance arts integration into the curriculum.
Participants enroll in both a morning Monday-Friday class and an afternoon Monday-Thursday class, and have other opportunities including mini-workshops, an evening lecture, and a field trip to the Ringling Museum. Time for communal reflection and interaction outside of the classroom is enjoyed during on-campus dining in the morning and at lunchtime. This "to the classroom and beyond" approach continues with Open Studio time available in multiple campus studios and lab classrooms.
On the final day, students participate in a debriefing session to share the week's experiences, insights, and accomplishments. Classroom practice and integration with regard to educational standards is highlighted and discussed by participants and faculty. A Closing Exhibition and Reception celebrates the week's many accomplishments, and serves as a venue for personal reflection on personal work and that of their peers.
Ringling College Continuing Studies and Special Programs awards students who successfully complete all scheduled programming 4 CEUs.
Summer Teacher Institute is funded in part by Ringling College of Art and Design. Cost: $295 that includes a $50 non-refundable reservation fee. Fees cover 40 hours of course instruction, lectures, one museum visit, closing exhibition & reception, on-campus lodging and 12 meals.

Digital Photography with Adobe Photoshop

Students must bring their own DSLR camera with manual operating functions. All skill levels welcome.
Learn to use your digital camera features effectively. In addition to memory cards, megabytes, optical and digital viewfinders and zoom, menu options and mega pixels the course covers composition, lighting, aperture and shutter speeds, and then moves onto Adobe Photoshop editing. Participants will use scanners, layers, and sequencing to manipulate their work, and select printing options to produce their final images. (Participants should bring a digital camera and instruction booklet.)
Book Art with Printmaking

Prior drawing experience is desirable. All skill levels welcome.
This course teaches print and book processes that combine drawing, painting, monoprint, lino-cut and paper techniques. Explore materials, color, tools and methods as you develop personal imagery and problem solving skills inherent in these creative processes. Participants will create images and bind them in an accordion book format.
Digital Painting with Photoshop

Prior Photoshop experience is desirable.
Learn to create artistic images with Photoshop brushes along with the mixer brush and other features. Whether you prefer pastels and oils, or watercolor this workshop will show you how to use Photoshop tools and techniques to digitally reproduce real world art media and techniques to begin to bring your vision to life.
Digital Filmmaking with the iPad

From Facebook to YouTube, digital film shot on a variety of tools from cell-phones to state-of the-art digital cameras, has become a fixture of the entertainment, educational and cultural landscape. The course covers the iPad operation as well as basic lighting, scripting, and storyboarding and Premier Pro editing. Participants will be guided with a contextual overview of digital film and basic video production techniques to each produce one short digital film. The week will conclude with a film screening of student work.
Mixed Media: Creative Exploration

Gain practical knowledge and experience through exploration that inspires artists of all skill levels to be creative. Hands-on exercises will push you bend artistic boundaries to instill confidence and guide you toward discovery. Broaden your artistic vision through thought-provoking mixed media experimentation to create original artwork unlike anything you've done in the past. Come expecting to learn, be inspired, and have fun!
2D, Color and Digital Processes

This class will introduce and use Adobe Photoshop to develop skills using the software's primary functions through hands-on projects incorporating the elements and principles of design Creating images using visual patterns, image manipulation, text, and a combination of all these elements you will create designs to visually communicate an idea that may be literal and recognizable or abstract and more interpretive, while mastering some of the primary functions of the Adobe Photoshop program.

Digital Drawing + Painting with the iPad

Some technological tools are game-changers – such is the case with the iPad. Participants in this workshop will be introduced to various drawing and painting approaches using touch screen technology, inexpensive apps, and fingers and/or styluses to create. Work can be exported and modified as picture files and then printed and further manipulated, or uploaded to websites, blogs and other digital locations. With a focus on drawing and painting from observation, this course is designed for the artist who wishes to develop or improve their observational skills and, at the same time, learn a new technology that revolutionizes drawing and painting approaches.
3D: Found Object Sculpture

Find it. Play with it. Imagine it. Create it. Give 3-dimensional form to your ideas. Stretch your imagination with the expressive art of assemblage sculpture. This creative course encourages playful exploration with found objects through hands-on experimentation, low impact building, and composition driven by your ideas. Art history discussion will look at assemblage influences for artists past and present.

This classical drawing course develops the participant’s figure drawing skills through the study of proportion, anatomy, gesture, figure/space relationship, value and mark making. Students will explore various techniques and dry materials. Progress is evaluated through individual critiques.
Sketchbook/Journal: a Mixed Media Approach

Explore a variety of approaches to using your sketchbook to record the world around you. Techniques for drawing, watercolor, writing, photography, collage, etc. will be demonstrated and discussed, with many visual examples for inspiration. The class experience will be a mix of creating work in the studio as well as working outside on location. This workshop will help you discover your personal approach to sketchbook journaling.
Stop Motion Design

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of motion through exercises exploring the traditional animation technique of 2D stop motion. Using digital media, time and rhythm, pace, editing and composition, the emphasis is on idea generation, creative problem solving, graphic explorations and collaboration to express movement to demonstrate metamorphosis, transition, and sequence.
Prior drawing experience is desirable.
This workshop celebrates the craftsmanship of letterpress printing, as it has been handed down over 500 years ago. From start to finish, you'll learn how to mix ink, hand set metal type, lock up a chase, ink up the press, register your cards, and print your very own set of 5" x 7" note cards on our vintage Vandercook Press. Choose from over 2000 antique engravings in our collection to embellish a design representative of you. Your limited edition cards will be hand printed, resulting in an elegant relief print, pleasing to both the eye and to the touch.
SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE CHECK-IN:
- CHECK-IN for Teacher Institute HOUSING ONLY is between 1:30-3:30 PM at the Office of Residence Life in the Ann and Alfred Goldstein Residence Hall, Office of Residence Life lobby.
- CHECK-IN for the Summer Teacher Institute program is 3:30–4:00 PM in the Academic Center lobby.
- ORIENTATION is required and will be held at 4:00 PM in the Academic Center Auditorium. Orientation will include a welcome from Ringling College staff, and wrap up with a break-out meeting with the instructor of your morning workshop.
- DIGITAL ORIENTATION is also required and will be held at 4:45 PM following the meeting with your morning workshop instructor. [The break-out room assignment will be provided at check-in.]
- WELCOME DINNER is a required event for all participants and begins at 6:00 PM in the Smith Gallery of the Academic Center
The Weekday Schedule:
- 7:30-8:30 AM: FOR ON-CAMPUS RESIDENTS - Breakfast is served daily in Hammond Commons. (Saturday breakfast will also be available for those staying over Friday night.)
- 8:30-12 Noon: Morning Classes meet Monday-Friday
- 12:15-1:15 PM: Lunch is served daily in the Academic Center Brickman Café.
- 1:30-5:00 PM: Afternoon Classes meet Monday-Thursday, with a special schedule of events late Thursday as well as Friday afternoon.
- Weeknight Dinners: You are on your own to explore beautiful Sarasota.
- Evening Open Studio Times/Locations will be announced.
Thursday afternoon workshops will end at 4:00 PM, and we will visit The John and Mabel Ringling Museum Thursday late afternoon and evening. Bus service to/from the museum will be provided for those not preferring to carpool.
The week concludes with a Debriefing Session conducted by Dr. Wendy Dickinson, focusing on Arts Integration. This will be followed by a screening of projects from digital filmmaking, and an exhibition of art work and the congratulatory closing reception.
Teacher Institute Refund Policies:
- Program withdrawal refunds, minus a $50 administrative fee are issued only when written notification is received by June 1. Notification can be mailed or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Refunds may take up to 15 days to process and are issued in the means payment was made to Ringling College of Art and Design.
- You may substitute someone to attend in your place up to one week prior to the program start date. At the time of substitution, the person filling your space must register with Continuing Studies and pay a $50 administrative fee.
- Ringling College will not refund the cost of any unused portion of your program.
- Ringling College reserves the right to require persons not complying with College policies to leave the program with no refund.
SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE FACULTY
Don Brandes received his BFA from University of Missouri and his MA from Syracuse University. He was formerly an illustrator for Hallmark Cards. He has taught at Kansas City Art Institute, was a MFA Thesis Adviser for Academy of Art College, San Francisco. He has numerous clients including Northwest Airlines. Don is a member of the Illustration faculty at Ringling College of Art and Design. www.donbrandes.com
Nancee Clark, figure painter and teacher holds an MFA in painting and drawing from University of Florida. Her work has been widely exhibited in the United States and has been shown in Japan and Monte Carlo. Clark received the State of Florida Visual Artist Fellowship two times. Nancee has taught at the University of Florida and Santa Fe Community College. She is currently a member of the Computer Animation faculty at Ringling College of Art and Design.
Wendy B. Dickinson, (PhD, University of South Florida) is Director of Art Education and is also a liberal arts instructor at Ringling College of Art and Design, teaching geometry, visual anthropology, and visual mathematics (statistics and graphical display). Her doctorate is in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in Educational Measurement and Research, and Cognate in Fine Arts. As a practicing studio artist, Wendy has exhibited her 2- and 3-dimensional prints and book arts in more than 90 regional, state, and national venues. Dr. Dickinson served as President of the Florida Educational Research Association is Contributing Editor for Anthropology News (2007–2012), was named a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (2008), and provides expertise as external evaluator for federal granting agencies, and provides program evaluation services to public school districts throughout Florida. Wendy Dickinson has made more than 100-refereed presentations at regional, national, and international research conferences in research areas of statistical methodology, authentic assessment, evaluation, graphical display, and computer programming.
Patrick Lindhardt earned a BA from St. Cloud State University and an MFA from University of South Florida. He is a Master printer and a member of the Fine Arts faculty at Ringling College of Art and Design. His work is included in the collections of Federal Express, Mase Art Center and other private collections. He is the owner of Flatstone Studio and serves as Advisor for Printmaking by Saff and Sacilotto. He is a member of the Florida Printmaking Society.
Joseph Loccisano is Manager of the Fine Art Gallery at Manatee Community College. He also teaches figure drawing, printmaking, and intercultural humanities. Loccisano holds a Master’s degree from the University of South Florida. Loccisano has taught figure drawing and figure painting for the Illustration Department at Ringling College of Art and Design; and Art & Culture at Nova Southeastern University. His artistic residencies include the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, and the Art Student’s League in New York City. He is Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Southern Graphics Council, and Vice City Director of the Sarasota Sister Cities Association (Treviso, Italy, delegation). For the past three years he has exhibited along with the printmakers of Sarasota Ink, and most recently participated in an exhibition at the Tampa Museum of Art. Loccisano continues to teach for Ringling’s Wildacres Artists’ Retreat as well as jury and lecture on art and art history.
Mark Parry, B.A., M.F.A. Chapman University (Art & Communications); University of Southern California (Film Production). Mark’s career in the motion picture industry spans 20 years and includes work in nearly every position critical to the creation of a film. As a cinematographer, Mark has shot over a dozen features and scores of other projects including commercials, music videos and shorts. His cinematography has won several awards including the Nissan FOCUS Award. He is a member of the Directors Guild of America, and as second unit director, he directed the Flying Elvises and the Hawaii aerial sequences in Honeymoon in Vegas, a 1993 Golden Globe nominee for Comedy. Mark is a member the Ringling College of Art and Design Digital Filmmaking faculty, and has previously taught at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts. In 2006, he mentored the director of the Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker Award winning film The Reel Monkey. In addition, Mark served as the cinematographer on the project. Mark has also guest-lectured at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Octavio Perez holds a BFA in from Ringling College of Art and Design (Illustration). He worked at Hallmark Cards, Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri for three years as a greeting card designer and illustrator. Currently Perez works on concept design and execution of editorial illustrations and news graphics for the St. Petersburg Times. Numerous national clients including Hallmark Cards Inc., GEAR Inc., Cabela's, and Humanities Magazine. Octavio is a member of the Ringling College of Art and Design Illustration faculty.
Jeff Schwartz received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from American University. He has also studied at The Vermont Studio and the Lorenzo di Medici School of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Jeff has been the winner of numerous awards and fellowships and exhibits nationally in New York, Seattle, Washington DC, Florida, Vermont and Utah. He has taught at Dartmouth College (NH) and the Academia di Bella Arti, Italy. Steven Strenk holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida in Tampa, and a BFA in Studio Art from Ringling College of Art and Design, and is a graduated from the Alternative Certification for Florida Teachers Program at Eckerd College earning a Professional Education Certificate. Strenk is a member of the Illustration faculty at Ringling College. He also teaches in the Visual Performance Arts Magnet Program at Booker High School in Sarasota where he is Head of the Foundation Program and teaches Advanced Placement Painting. He is responsible for all aspects of course development for freshmen and sophomore classes and he coordinates and supervises all auditions for placement into the Art Program. He is also responsible for all aspects of course development for college-bound seniors. Jill Taffert received her BFA (Fine Arts) from The Cooper Union in New York. She is an EMMY® Award-winning Creative Director who has worked broadly in the motion design industry and as an education in the profession. She has been recognized with number design awards from BDA, AIG, The Art Directors Club, The Type Directors Club, Graphis, and The Academy of Arts and Sciences for her work with E!, ESPN, MSNBC, Discovery Networks, Oxygen, and TV Land. She has served as professor and chair of Motion Design, Media Arts and Animation at San Francisco Art Institute, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Otis College of Art and Design. Now as a member of the faculty at Ringling College of Art and Design, she teaches classes in Motion Design, Experimental Animation, Visualization and Concept, Network Design and Branding, Main Title Design, and Portfolio. Ms. Taffert is in progress towards a MFA in Design and Technology from the San Francisco Art Institute.
Athena Torri holds a BFA in Photography from Ringling College of Art and Design and a Certificate from the International Center of Photography’s General Studies Program, NY. She began her professional career in 2007 as a Photographer for the Public Relations division of Ringling College. She has assisted photographer Nan Goldin, artist Corrine Botz, and worked for the New York State Council on the Arts. She has exhibited at 25 CPW, Selby Gallery and The International Center of Photography; and has been published in American Photo On Campus Magazine, UnderWrite Art, and Shift Book. She currently co-owns a photography and video services corporation and Studio in Beacon, NY. And works as a production intern at Conveyor Arts; a photography bookmaking company. www.athenatorri.com
