The key to drawing and painting perceptual realism is to understand the nature or effects of light and the inherent quality of forms. The optical tradition in which masters like Velázquez, Rembrandt and Vermeer worked resulted from their investigation into the essential qualities of light and the construct of form. Students will render subjects in the same optical tradition, learning to construct and model form by gaining an understanding of the character of light and by learning about what they are drawing. The course will then guide students through the process of developing a painting using the traditional techniques of indirect painting to develop a fully realized monochromatic under painting upon which thin layers of paint are applied to achieve the effects of the Old Masters. This hands-on class will cover all aspects of low-light photography, including ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and the use of ambient light. The class includes a field trip to capture Sarasota’s night skyline, a lesson in Photoshop, and a group critique of the images. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Learn the basics of photo management, enhancement, and publishing in one indispensable interface using what has become the “go to” software for professional photographers! This course covers techniques such as importing, processing, and organizing images, managing workflow, manipulating images with ease, and creating post-production slideshows, web galleries, and print picture packages. Lightroom allows you to make any series of changes to one or all your photos, at the same time. It allows you to shoot from within the program, do post production and print within the same interface and, it will work with Photoshop by having a quick command to open the same image from Lightroom to Photoshop. You can now do video and make books from this same program. Professional photographers have said, ‘In my personal and professional work it allows me to do in 3 hours what would take me 3 days’. Students will use their own laptop/digital notebook and acquire the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software through a free trial or purchase. This seminar includes lectures on anatomy, emphasizing bone structure, and discussions on expression, ethnic differences and body language. Three days of intensive work are spent on sculpting exercises in water-based clay of the nude figure with step-by-step, one-on-one instruction. Study from models and numerous exercises are used to assist students in understanding the intricacies of modeling the human face and figure. Though participants are welcome to keep any projects worked on during the seminar, the goal is not to work toward the completion of a single finished piece, but rather to provide students the opportunity to experiment on numerous small studies. CSSP instructors are working professionals. Unforeseen circumstances may deem it necessary to postpone, cancel, or reassign a course. In the event a course or workshop is cancelled, the College’s liability is limited to the return of fees paid for that course. Refund Policies:
Cancellation IN WRITING is required. (Voice mail cancellations cannot be accepted.) Cancellation notices may be submitted by mail or email to cssp@ringling.edu. Refunds are issued in the original payment method and may take up to 10 business days to process.
For Spring Art withdrawals, refunds minus a $25 administration fee are issued only when written notification is received no later than 5 (five) business days prior to first class session. No refunds are issued after this time. For Spring Art Week Visiting Artist Workshops a refund, minus a $50 administrative fee, will be issued for written cancellations received 30 (thirty) business days in advance. Subsequently, no refunds will be granted, but you may substitute someone to attend in your place.

SPRING ART FACULTY BIOGRAPHES
CSSP instructors are experienced educators who are practicing artists and designers that maintain a competitive edge in their creative fields. Many of our instructors are also members of the faculty teaching ini the Ringling College of Art and Design BFA and BA degree programs.
Lucy Barber has a BFA from Pratt Institute in Photography and an MFA from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in Painting. She has taught at Pratt Institute, The College of William & Mary, Maine College of Art, Bowdoin College, Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, State University of New York at Farmingdale, Riverdale Country School, Bronx, NY, and International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture, Montecastello, diVibio, Italy. Lucy is a member of Zeuxis, a collaborative of artists practicing still-life painting. She has exhibited nationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and also has exhibited in Italy and Greece. Barber’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Art New England, among others. Her works are part of corporate and private collections, including the United States Department of State, General Electric Corporation, Lenox, Inc., and Pfizer Inc.
Peter Brown is a painter and full time faculty member for Ringling College of Art and Design. His works has been included in numerous regional and national exhibitions and collections, including galleries in Florida, Maine and New York City. He holds a BS from University of Massachusetts and an MFA from Indiana University. Brown has received the Florida Visual Artist Fellowship, the Delta Fricke grant, and the 2010 Rome Prize Fellowship. Jeffery Cornwell studied fine art at Ringling College of Art and Design. He is an exhibiting painter whose work is represented by galleries in Florida, Texas, and on the west coast of the United States. Kevin Costello holds BA and MA degrees. He attended Chelsea School of Art/Goldsmiths College [Sculpture], Goldsmiths College, University of London [Art History]. Kevin is an adjunct faculty member for Ringling College of Art and Design and has previously taught at Stetson University, Eckerd College. Howard Cowdrick studied fine arts at the Dayton Art Institute, the University of South Florida as well as the Arrowmont School of Art and Design. His emphasis has been on marketing artwork including research of new ways to present art and increase sales in an ever-changing market.
Elena De La Ville is a mixed media artist working with photography, encaustic and collage. She studied painting at the School of Fine Arts, Venezuela; Textile Design at the Chelsea School of Art in London; and Photography at the Art Institute of Boston. Her work has been exhibited at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Venezuela; Danforth Museum of Art in Massachusetts; Shaw Cramer and Dragonfly Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard. Paddy Dugan Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Dugan is a nationally published and award-winning master tile artist. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her first publication was in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine with many more to follow. Sarasota, Florida has been her home since 1995, where her tiles and sinks are individually hand painted then kiln-fired then shipped all over the United States. She was voted one of Sarasota's Best Women In Business and nominated for Small Business of the Year. Philippe Faraut received his degree in woodcarving and the construction of French fine furniture from Germain Sommeillier in Annecy, France, his boyhood home. An avid traveler, Philippe’s destinations have allowed him the opportunity to study the cultures of many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, thus influencing his work in portraiture. After establishing residence in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia, he developed an interest in modeling the head in clay. Graciela Giles, originally from Argentina, has been an active watercolorist and teacher for two decades, earning awards from art societies for her sensitive portrayals of landscapes and people. Her paintings are in private collections internationally and in galleries in Florida and North Carolina. She and her husband Herbie Rose were instrumental in the founding of the Village of the Arts in Bradenton, Florida.
Bonnie Hammer holds an MFA in Computer Art from the School of Visual Arts, NY, and a BFA in Graphic Design from Rochester Institute of Technology, NY. Hammer has been a professional designer, director and production manager for over 20 years, and she has been teaching design for the past 12 years. She was the VSA Arts of Florida, Arts and Disabilities Teaching Artist Observer and the Teaching Artist in Residence in 2010. www.hammerized.com
Marcia Johnson is a working teacher and artist. She is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art, the Art Institute of Boston, and Cambridge College. She holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts and a Masters Degree in Education. Marcia is an advocate of whole brain learning, and in her book, Painting from Both Sides of the Brain, she presents her paintings in oils and watercolor, both abstract and realism, glowing with a distinctive luminescence and a vibrant sense of light. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows, one-woman shows and private collections in Boston, Los Angeles, Milan and Bali. Marcia has taught at universities for ten years, and at Ringling College for six years.
Maria Kovacs started her journey as an artist using other media before exploring tapestry more completely in her studies for an MFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005. Using drawing, embroidery, and mixed media in addition and sometimes combined with tapestry, Kovacs finds expression. She completed an artist residency in Newfoundland, worked as a Teaching Assistant for Jon Eric Riis at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, received the Dendel Scholarship from the Handweavers Guild of America in addition to a Graduate Student Assistantship at VCU. Kovacs currently shows her work competitively, teaches tapestry on occasion, works full-time to keep body and soul together, and live in the woods in Maine.
Jill Lerner received her BFA from Arizona State University. She has been Master Printer at Limestone Press with publisher Hank Hine, production coordinator for Graphicstudio/Institute for Research in Art at the University of South Florida, and participated in planning and sponsoring educational and technical workshops including Oaxaca, Mexico where the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Oaxaca hosted photogravure and heliorelief workshops.
Catherine Lucas’ artistic education includes a BFA from Hofstra University and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art where she studied with Steven Assael, Harvey Citron, Patrick Conners, Jon DeMartin, Peter Drake, Martha Erlebacher, John Jacobsmyer, Alyssa Monks, and Edward Scmidt. After receiving her Master’s degree at NYAA, she continued her studies in classical realism with a nine-month intensive program under the tutelage of Anthony Ryder at the Ryder Studio School in Santa Fe, NM. catherinelucasart.com
Caroll Michels has served as a career coach and artist’s advocate since 1978. She is the author of the classic handbook How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist. Selling Yourself without Selling Your Soul (Henry Holt & Company, New York), which is now in its 6th edition. She has helped thousands of beginning, mid-career and established fine artists launch and sustain their careers. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums in the U.S. and abroad including the Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Institute for Contemporary Art in New York. Michels has received numerous grants, including those awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts; the NY State Council for the Arts; the NY Council for the Humanities; and the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture/UNESCO.
Brooke Olivares-Caloiaro earned a BFA, in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design. Olivares is a gallery painter represented by Kiley Court Gallery, Provincetown, MA, and Ghostprint Gallery, Richmond, VA. She has had works published and clients include CMYK, FORMAT Magazine, RISEN Magazine, North American Literary Review, Ringling PERSPECTIVE, The San Diego Reader, The Cimarron Review, and Recording Magazine. www.brookeolivares.com
Omar Otero holds a BFA in Photography and Digital Imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design. Otero has worked with actors and New York television crew on the daytime dramas All My Children, One Life to Live, Guiding Light, and As the World Turns. In 2006, he established his company, Omarr Photography specializing in weddings, individual and family portraits, and fine art. He has photographed Food Network’s own Paula Dean, and has worked nationally and internationally across Europe, Russia and Guatemala.He is a member of the Professional Photographers of America and the local chapter of the Professional Photographer’s Guild, and has received national honors, winning the Ava Video Award. Lisa Pressman, adjunct professor at Art Institute of New York teaches painting and encaustic workshops nationally including: R&F Handmade Paints, Kingston, NY, Cullowhee Mountain Arts, Cullowhee, North Carolina and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, MA. Recent 2012 group exhibitions include: Confluence: Medium Meets Message at the Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL, and Merge: Printmaking and Encaustic at the Castle Hill Gallery in Truro, MA. Her work was recently included in an online exhibition, 40 years of Women in Art at Douglass Library, Institute for Women and Art, New Brunswick, NJ. and also Encaustic Works 2012, an exhibition in print juried by Joanne Mattera. She has a solo show planned at The Rosenfeld Gallery, Philadelphia, PA in 2013.
Charles Reid is an artist, teacher and author known around the world. He has authored eight books on painting, which are directed toward students at all levels. His use of beautiful clean color and his capture of light create a look of freshness and spontaneity. His drawing skills are masterful. Reid studied at the University of Vermont and The Art Student League of New York. He is a member of the National Academy and the National Watercolor Society where he has won numerous awards. His work is in collections private, corporate and educational institutions throughout the Unites States and the world, and represented by the Munson Gallery in Chatham, Massachusetts and Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Stremmel Gallery in Reno, Nevada. www.charlesreidart.com
Julia Balzer Riley holds a MS in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. Her experience includes staff nurse; clinical nurse specialist; community mental health faculty for diploma, baccalaureate, and graduate nursing; training and development; management development; and entrepreneur. Her area of specialization is health caring connections between caregiver and client, the client’s family, and other staff. Her mission is to Respirit, Reinspire, and Revitalize. Currently, she facilitates expressive arts at the Hospice of Southwest Florida.
Adam Roland, licensed interior designer, is a project manager for an architectural firm in St Petersburg, Florida. He holds a BFA from the Ringling College of Art and Design and has worked on a variety of projects ranging from small residential renovations to multi-million dollar corporate headquarters. He has worked with Michael Saunders and Company, Ruden McClosky, Simon Mall Properties and GE Security among others. www.adamroland.com
Pamela Sumner works as a painter and printmaker applying Asian materials and techniques to large gestural works on paper. “As an artist, I follow the Eastern traditions of painting with mind-body connections and keeping it simple. Less is more.” She holds a BA in Communications and Fine Art from St. Lawrence University with advanced studies at Harvard, MIT, UCLA, Boston University and the University of Florence, Italy. Sumner offers workshops in traditional Asian painting techniques as well as experimental ink painting here in Ringling’s Continuing Studies Program. She leads Zen painting retreats at various locations in the US and Canada. Pamela also works as a public art and design consultant, managing art acquisitions and installations for commercial clients including Whole Foods Markets in Florida.
Glenn Vilppu has worked in the Animation Industry concurrently while teaching since 1978. He holds BFA and MFA Degrees from Art Center College of Design, and has also studied at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles and Santa Monica City College. His work is in collections throughout the North American and Europe. He says, “Drawing is the primary means the artist has to communicating his thinking, and figure drawing has been the measure of an artist’s skill since the caveman. As a drawing instructor I am dedicated to developing the student’s capabilities to communicate visually to their fullest extent. Michael White graduated in 1985 from the first Illustration class at Ringling College of Art and Design. He started drawing at age 2 and was published by age 11. At 14, he completed his original comic book series, and was painting murals for churches and creating courtroom sketches for newspapers. Since then, his clients included Marvel Comics, Coca-Cola, Amoco Oil, Delta Airlines, Hyatt Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, and Atlantis Resort. He has created art for Sarasota Opera House, Tropicana, Child Protection Agency, Circus Sarasota, Sarasota Magazine, and the Humane Society and drew caricatures at the 2010 Super Bowl. One of his most visible pieces is the illustrated map used by Ringling Museum of Art. He has taught at Ringling College for 20 years, and says, “growing up, I was always the teacher’s helper. Kathy Wright has a Master’s Degree in Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science from Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a recipient of a 2009-2010 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and she has enjoyed multiple residencies through the Everglades National Park Artist-in-Residence Program in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Michael Wyshock has a BFA from University of Delaware (BFA, Painting; Minor – History) and an MFA from Florida State University (Painting and Digital Video). Mr. Wyshock, who has also studies at the Rhode Island School of Design/Pont/Aven School of Art in Brittany, France, is a painter, filmmaker, and video artist who combines multiple mediums of art to produce rich, provoking, and experimental images. His paintings are responses to environmental contamination but also examine space and dimension through color and shape. His video projects include fabric sculptures that hold choreographed animated projections on multiple surfaces and materials like water, plastics and crumbled glass creating a dialog of chaos that informs his painting. Certificate Programs of Study:
Certificate Programs provide educational opportunities through a comprehensive course of study on a part-time basis that can enhance your personal growth and build professional skills. Ringling College of Art and Design currently offers four Certificate Programs in visual art and design:
- General Studies in Fine Arts
- General Studies in Photography
- Interior Concepts
- Digital Graphics
Certificates are earned through enrollment in a series of required and elective courses. Required, sequential courses provide students with a necessary base for the certificate study. Elective courses provide students with the opportunity to expand their skills and/or focus on a specialized area of interest. Certificate courses are non-credit and are not transferable to an academic degree program.

Facilities Safety Guidelines Agreement (click here) for submission by all students enrolled in Continuing Studies and Special Programs classes and workshops.
Ringling College of Art and Design enforces a policy for environmental protection procedures and has established safe working and learning procedures for Environmental Health and Safety issues.
The College’s policy meets the requirements of Federal, State and local laws and regulations to secure the environmental health and safety concerns for the campus community and applies to all faculty, staff, students and visitors and to all sites under the control of Ringling College. The aim of our policies is to:
- Provide a safe working and learning environment for employees, students and visitors.
- Reduce injuries and illnesses to the lowest possible level.
- Increase awareness and understanding of environmental health and safety arrangements and procedures.
- Work to eliminate and/or reduce hazards and risks.
- Remove or reduce exposure to toxic materials.
- Replace dangerous materials and processes with safer choices.
Ringling College requires all students enrolled in classes and workshops offered through Continuing Studies and Special Programs (CSSP) to read and sign their acceptance of the policy as outlined in Facilities Safety Rules and Guidelines. Once signed and returned, the agreement to abide by the College’s policies will remain on file and in effect so long as the student continues to enroll in courses offered by CSSP. The College takes seriously any violation of the EHS Policy. Any breach of this Policy will be investigated and, where appropriate, action will be considered under the College’s disciplinary code.
