Liberal Arts General Education Requirements 
(36-42 credit hours)

For BFA programs, there are 10 3-credit course requirements in the Liberal Arts program and 4 3-credit course requirements in Art History.  The Liberal Arts Curriculum is divided into three categories:  Liberal Arts Core Courses (5 courses), Liberal Arts Elective Courses (3-4 courses), and First Year Gateway Courses (1-2 courses).  For the Business of Art and Design (BOAD) program, the Art History requirement is only 2 courses.

Art History

4 courses required (2 for BOAD)               12 credit hours (6 for BOAD)

Liberal Arts Core Courses: designed to combine general background knowledge with the development of essential competencies.

5 courses required                                    15 credit hours


Arts and Humanities
1 course required                                  3 credit hours
Principle competencies served: Artistic Discernment, Thinking, Writing.

Cross-Cultural Perspectives
1 course required                                  3 credit hours
Principal competencies served:  Global perspectives, listening.

Literary Traditions
1 course required                                  3 credit hours
Principal competencies served:  Reading, critical thinking, writing.

Scientific Practices
1 course required                                  3 credit hours
Principal competencies served:  Scientific/quantitative reasoning, social responsibility.

Writing
1 course required                                  3 credit hours
Principal competencies served:  Writing, reading.

Liberal Arts Elective Courses: courses that make closer connections to the majors and cover themes that are not addressed in the Core Courses. These courses tend to be interdisciplinary in nature and emphasize there role of art and design in today's world incorporate collaboration and group project management.

3-4 courses required                                    9-12 credit hours

First Year Gateway Courses: introduce students to the foundational issues of contemporary art and design, providing students with a shared understanding of issues and terminology that are necessary for success in their respective programs. Additionally, the courses provide a general introduction to the experience and goals of the liberal arts. First Year Gateway courses are organized by First Year Learning Communities (Design Arts, Studio Arts, and Media Arts).

To Further Pursue a Subject:

  1. Ask the instructor for an in-course project in an area of interest.
  2. Use a Liberal Arts elective to take an independent study on the subject.
  3. Use a studio elective to take an independent study class supervised by studio and Liberal Arts faculty.
  4. Ask a Liberal Arts faculty member to mentor a studio project
