In a new column for SRQ Magazine, Ringling College of Art and Design President Dr. Davis Schneiderman and his wife, Kelly Haramis, reflect on an idea at the heart of every artist’s journey: failure is not the end of creation but an essential part of it. Drawing on their own three decades together as writers and performers, and on the energy they’ve witnessed among Ringling students during their first months in Sarasota, they make the case that taking risks, and sometimes falling short, is how artists grow.

“Recently, we took a campus tour with a Ringling senior guide. When we asked her why she chose Ringling College, she answered immediately: She told us she wants to leave a critique with real feedback—not a symbolic trophy for participation—and that’s what will make her a better artist. That’s the ‘Failbetter’”’ mindset in action,” the duo shared.
