Ringling College of Art and Design alum Echo Wu ’17, Computer Animation, is currently in post-production on her Netflix animated series, Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld.
As creator and director of Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld, she shared that the series is inspired in part by her own experiences as a first-generation Chinese-American. It follows a teenage girl with superpowers who battles demons while navigating high school in a small Texas town. Stand-up comedian, writer, and actress Ali Wong gives voice to the main character Jentry.
Wu was listed as one of Variety magazine’s 2024 “10 Animators to Watch” for the Netflix series. In addition to her own life, she told Variety that she was also inspired by Gen Z and “their love of random humor and unhinged personalities.”
In 2016 and 2017, Wu and Ringling classmates Kaloyan Athannassov and John McDonald won recognition from the Student Academy Awards, the College Emmys, and a number of film festivals for their senior thesis film, The Wishgranter. Read more about that film and its reception in our news archives.
