Creative Writing
Tell your story in this genre-crossing BFA program.

At Ringling College, we believe that well-told stories can speak truths and communicate ideas. Creative Writing is at the heart of crafting, developing, and sharing any narrative, no matter what medium you choose to reach audiences. That’s why we developed our Creative Writing program—to support, empower, and honor young writers.

Becoming a Creative Writing major means joining a group of passionate writers interested in building compelling narratives. In this curriculum, and creative writing classes, you’ll encounter a range of aesthetics, a global perspective, coursework in historical, contemporary, and digital literary forms, craft instruction from practicing writers/teachers, and close interaction with visiting authors, scholars, and publishing professionals. Most important, at Ringling College, you’ll learn by doing. And the opportunity to do a wide range of writing is here from day one.

Graduates of this 120-credit Creative Writing BFA will have the technical competence and fluency to succeed in the narrative possibilities that print, digital media, and new technologies offer. Our graduates will be ready to compete in a job market where finely-crafted words, great stories, and professional standards will always be in demand.

Opportunities for Creative Writing students

Visiting Writers Forum
Every Creative Writing major participates in the Visiting Writers Forum every semester. As a Creative Writing major, you will read samples of an author’s work before attending an on-campus reading and talk with plenty of time for a craft-focused Q&A. Discover the various blueprints for success as a writer directly from successful, working writers in the field. Visiting professionals will include local poets, graphic novelists, newspaper editors, literary agents, screenwriters, and novelists.

The Design Center
Put your creative writing design skills to work in the Ringling College Design Center. Working with our dedicated faculty and in-house designers, you will have the opportunity to solve real communications problems for external clients, as well as for Ringling College events, exhibitions, and recruitment efforts.

Work with our Career Services Center to prepare and guide you to finding an internship focused on your area of interest – we are here to help!  With networks around the region and the country, we help you gain exposure to professional best practices and practical application of your technical skills. We are constantly connecting with industry professionals to find new, exciting opportunities to put your skills to work and get a taste of real-world work demands.
All Creative Writing majors at Ringling College have the opportunity to undergo a writing internship during the summer. This internship feeds into the curriculum directly as students will follow it up with a Fall course, INT 301, during which they reflect on their experience for credit.

Studio Lab
The Ringling College Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab program connects aspiring film and production students to the best known filmmakers, screenwriters, producers, directors, and actors from around the world. Collaborate with, listen to, and engage with the leading filmmakers in the industry who are coming to Ringling College to share their insights and meet emerging talent right here in Sarasota.

The Collaboratory
We are proud to say that every Ringling student, regardless of major, is guaranteed the opportunity to gain professional work experience. Our Collaboratory Commitment pairs teams of Ringling students with local businesses to give students a taste of real-world projects, expectations, and deadlines. Facilitated by Collaboratory staff, students will meet with clients looking for creative, unconventional solutions to their branding and design challenges and execute the entire creative process of concepting, presenting, and building campaigns that meet their demands.
