Artificial Intelligence (AI) Undergraduate Certificate Overview
The AI Undergraduate Certificate program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about incorporating AI into their creative workflows. By understanding the capabilities, limitations, and ethical implications of AI, our graduates will be prepared to advocate for themselves and navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this technology in their chosen fields.
The certificate is available to all Ringling College students and appears on transcripts upon graduation. It is designed to empower the next generation of artists, designers, and creatives with the career-ready skills and knowledge to successfully shape the future of art with AI, rather than simply being shaped by it.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge in artificial intelligence and machine learning principles, understanding their application in creative contexts.
- Analyze the ethical, societal, and cultural implications of AI in creative practices, advocating for responsible and thoughtful use of technology.
- Apply AI technologies in art and design projects, showcasing the ability to integrate AI tools in creative work.
- Solve complex problems through critical thinking and creative application of AI, demonstrating the ability to tackle real-world challenges with innovative approaches.

Curriculum Structure
The AI Certificate requires the completion of three courses, which can be taken in any order:
Required Course:
- Fundamentals of AI: Addresses current and emerging trends in AI, including ethical considerations and technological advancements. Course topics are determined each semester to address AI’s impact on various sectors of art and design.
Pick Any Two AI Electives:
- AI Techniques and Processes for Art: A wide-ranging exploration into generating AI images as part of the design and illustration process. The course concentrates on best practices, an iterative process, and leveraging the tools available to have complete control over image generation. Course work will cover a variety of disciplines including illustrative, concept, video, game, and product design artwork.
- Topics in Artificial Intelligence: Addresses current and emerging trends in AI, including ethical considerations and technological advancements. Course topics are determined each semester to address AI’s impact on various sectors of art and design.
- AI Enhanced Existing Courses: Courses that have been revised to address at least two of the Certificate in AI learning goals embedded plus have at least 30 percent of its curricular content related to AI would qualify for inclusion as an option in the certificate. The following courses are currently in development for potential inclusion in the AI Certificate:
- Story Fundamentals Revision, Costume Visual Development, Digital Painting for Game Art, Profession of Film, Intro to Time Based, Concept Development for Virtual Worlds, Professional Writing
