Penguin Random House, the 98-year-old book publishing giant, has produced a Spanish-language book written and illustrated by Antonio Machado ’27, Illustration. Roberto, el zorro rojo (“Roberto, the red fox”) tells the story of Roberto, a fox who struggles to express his emotions and interact with others, wrestling with anxiety on his first day back at school.
The story doubles as a guide to understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and includes supplemental information from Juanita Boada, a neurodiversity specialist and the author’s mother.
“It took a lot of editing, art/style changes, back-and-forth feedback with Penguin, but after one year of work I was able to finally publish this wonderful project, even making my mother part of it,” Machado said. He first envisioned and presented the idea for the story during a class at Ringling College.
“The production and development for Roberto el zorro rojo was my first ever professional project as an illustrator and my first time talking openly about my experience with ASD,” he added. “It was a challenging but exciting project I’m proud to finally share with the world.”
