2D Character Animation students will soon join the ranks of the institution’s renowned Computer Animation department, which has been ranked No. 1 in the world for consecutive years. This year alone, Computer Animation alumni have earned multiple Emmy Awards for their work as writers, directors, storyboard artists, and character designers, while another 66 graduates contributed to the 2026 Oscar-nominated films KPop Demon Hunters, Elio, and Zootopia 2.

The 2D Character Animation program will combine traditional draftsmanship with contemporary production tools, empowering students to create original characters, stories, and worlds while developing the skills needed to build and own their creative intellectual property. Students in the program will learn how to transform ideas into professional-quality animated content for film, television, streaming, games, and emerging media platforms.

“We’re excited to build on the success of our 3D Animation program by expanding into 2D Animation, a creative path students have been asking for,” said Ringling College Computer Animation Department Head Paul Downs. “With the indie animation market growing and providing new ways for artists to build their own audiences, the timing couldn’t be better. We want to help our students create opportunities—not wait for them.”

This program will provide the artistic, technical, and entrepreneurial foundation needed to thrive in today’s evolving animation industry. A Creative Entrepreneurship Certificate will be built into the curriculum, giving students practical skills in the development, production, and promotion of their own creative work. Students who graduate with a degree in 2D Character Animation will have the full pipeline skillset to work at a major studio, build a freelance career, or launch their own creator-owned indie productions.

Like most majors at Ringling College, technology will be at the forefront. The 2D Character Animation program will boast six state-of-the-art labs equipped with industry-standard software and a Wacom Cintiq at every workstation. An added bonus: Students will work at animation desks donated by Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida, used to animate films including Mulan, Tarzan, Lilo and Stitch, and Brother Bear

Students interested in the 2D Character Animation program can choose from three application options: Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision. Click here for more information on dates and deadlines.
