A Cause for Celebration
The outcome of this year’s energetic NBA Championship was a momentous occasion for fans, players, and states alike, but it was especially memorable for Motion Design student Casper Chappel ‘27.
Interning this summer at Madison Square Garden, Chappell is part of the Motion Design team responsible for the branding and graphics of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, as well as their affiliated team Westchester Knicks.
Inside the Garden
Madison Square Garden is an internationally recognized arena located in Midtown Manhattan that is highly regarded for its famous performances and cultural impact on New York City.
Most famously, the Garden is home to New York’s basketball and hockey teams, respectively known as the Knicks and Rangers, the former of which won this year’s NBA Championship for the first time since 1973, ending a fifty-three year losing streak.
Working for the Winners
With increasing attention on the Knicks, graphics were needed to be bigger and better to match the hype. The department Chappell works in achieved just that.
Responsible for brand redesign, graphics retexturing, and package restyling, as well as jumbotron animation and real-time editing, Chappell works in a fast-paced environment with a close-knit team that works collectively to get the job done.
Chappell’s work goes beyond just editing. In their biggest project yet, they spearheaded graphics for the Knicks’ watch party in Central Park where thousands of New Yorkers watched Chappell’s work live. The designs seen were all pitched, created, and animated by Chappell themself.
