Monitoring Tropical Storm Nicole

Monitoring Tropical Storm Nicole

Update: 11/9/22, 12 pm

The Ringling College Emergency Response Team (ERT) continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Nicole.

Tropical Storm Nicole is still predicted to be a large, unorganized system forecasted to make landfall in southeast Florida tonight. It will bring a large wind field on the north side of the storm bringing wind gusts of approx. 40-50 mph to our area between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Our area may also experience 2-3 inches of rainfall.

Due to this forecast and out of an abundance of caution, CLASSES will move to online delivery TODAY beginning at 6:30 pm and ALL THURSDAY CLASSES will be remote. Some classes will not be able to move online, and those faculty will inform their students that their classes are canceled. Campus labs will remain open, but please use caution when moving around campus and monitor the weather conditions.

Hammond Commons will remain open to students on Thursday for brunch and dinner. To-go boxes will also be available to take away tonight and Outtakes will close by 7 pm. Brickman Cafe, Outtakes, and the Food Truck will be closed on Thursday and reopen on Friday, November 11.

Supervisors are encouraged to arrange for all non-essential employees to work remotely on Thursday if possible.

The Museum Campus and Englewood Art Center will close to the public on Thursday, and will open for normal business on Friday, November 11.

If the current forecast holds, offices and courses will run on their normal schedules on Friday, November 11, 2022 and in-person classes will resume. However, we will continue to monitor the storm’s trajectory and will update our College community if we need to adjust tomorrow’s schedule.

We encourage you to share these updates with concerned families and friends.

Update: 11/8/22, 4 pm

The Ringling College Emergency Response Team (ERT) continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Nicole.

The National Hurricane Center is actively tracking Nicole, which was recently upgraded to a tropical storm. This storm is predicted to be a large, unorganized system forecasted to make landfall as a Category 1 Hurricane on the East Central Florida Coast, late Wednesday night.

It is likely that our area will experience tropical storm force winds and rain as Nicole moves across Florida later this week.

The ERT Team will meet tomorrow morning to assess the situation and come to a decision about the possibility of moving classes to remote instruction for Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.

Please monitor your emails for updated communications and consider preparations you should make in the event the storm strengthens.
