Illustration alum Jamiel Law ’19 will give an artist talk at the Arts Advocates Gallery in Sarasota on Feb. 23 from 4-6 pm. Law’s talk, “Don’t Breath,” takes its title from an illustration Law created. The work and talk consider the psychological notion of police presence in the African American community in the United States. The illustration was first published as part of LSESU Amnesty International Society’s annual human rights journal, A Climate of Change

Law lives in Parrish, Florida, and works as a designer for BUCK, a global creative company that brings brands, stories, and experiences to life through art, design, and technology. Law has had work published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NBC News, among others. Much of his work considers the social and psychological conditions of African Americans, like his illustration for a New York Times article titled, “How to Convince a White Realtor You’re Middle Class: Black people expend daily energy to counteract racial stereotypes and get fair treatment.”

You can attend “Don’t Breathe: Jamiel Law Finds His Voice” on Feb. 23 from 4-6 pm at Arts Advocates Gallery, The Crossings at Siesta Key. The talk is free for Arts Advocates members and $5 for non-members.
